Caring For Your Treasures: Holiday Edition

Many people choose to decorate their homes this time of year, and occasionally objects get inadvertently damaged. Here are some quick tips to help protect your objects during this holiday season!

Think about placement of live greens

Live greens can really transform a space, but they can also be problematic around our treasures.

  • Before bringing anything into your home, inspect your greens to make sure they are pest free. Many treasures such as wood and textiles look like delicious holiday meals to pests, so be sure they stay outside.

  • When placing your greens, consider how you will water them. For instance, consider removing anything that could be damaged from excess water from a spray bottle, or bumped when trying to pour water.

  • For items that are being watered, make sure they are on a platform that will prevent water from leaking out and damaging your treasure underneath, such as a plastic base.

Keep the temperature and humidity consistent

Fluctuating in temperature and humidity are not good for objects, as it makes them expand and contract causing cracks and delamination.

  • Avoid placing objects near radiators, heat vents, or doors/windows, where temperature and humidity can fluctuate widely.

  • Use a humidifier in dry winter conditions to maintain a steady relative humidity.

Consider moving your treasures away from fires

Many of us have fires in our homes daily; candles, fireplaces, cigars/cigarettes, and even cooking. Over time, the smoke from these fires can cause damage to objects. Porous objects will collect the ash, soot, and smoke, textiles gain a smell, and painting varnish gets darker.

  • Consider moving paintings/objects away from the fireplace when it is in use.

  • Keep lit candles away from flammable objects, or places where dripping wax may cause damage.

Add a protective layer to your objects

  • Use coasters, writing pads, tablecloths, and protective covers to prevent the object from scratches or water damage.

  • Mylar is a translucent protective material that can be purchased in rolls and can cut to shape to cover larger surfaces.

I hope you find these tips helpful as you deck your halls. Wishing everyone a safe and happy holiday season!
