Voices of Preservation

While our offices are closed and we are primarily working remotely, Historic Annapolis continues to work towards our mission to provide meaningful connections to the places that are of importance to our community.

There is a strong and deep connection among the Annapolis preservation community...

We firmly believe, now more than ever, that community assets and civic identity can be a source of comfort in an unsettling time. Historic preservation is intimately tied to our quality of life, and as a community, we can remain connected through shared experiences and places. And while we may be physically apart, we do not need to be distant: through virtual programming, through images and through narratives, we can retain a sense of community that is both grounding and reassuring.

During this time of closure, we will be providing you with regular updates about a variety of programs. The responsibilities of the preservation division are many, ranging from property management to historic markers. We also serve as local advocates to protect our architectural heritage. This issue was especially important over the past year as we co-led the discussions on the future of City Dock with the City. Additionally, my colleague Michael Day has been managing the restoration of the James Brice house on behalf of HA, the most ambitious restoration project that HA has embarked upon in decades. This is a fascinating project on so many different levels. Since we cannot bring you inside the house at this time, we view this as a terrific opportunity to bring the inside out to you.

There is a strong and deep connection among the Annapolis preservation community, and I believe that this connection inspires HA to adapt, to endure, and to continue with meaningful preservation work. We look forward to connecting with you all in person again. In the meantime, please look for regular updates from the Preservation Division, and call on us if you need any assistance in the interim.

Best, Karen Theimer Brown Vice President, Preservation
